The sprit sailing boat from Tåsinge, Denmark from 1890
This boat was built in 1890 on the island of Tåsinge in southern Denmark. Such boats were often seen in the waters around Svendborg in those days. This one was built for a farmer on the island of Halmø. In addition to fishing, it was used to ferry schoolchildren and transport freight between Halmø and Ærø. The peasants then had such boats for transport and travel between the islands.
The sprit sailing boat is described in Christian Nielsen’s book, “Wooden Boat Designs, Classic Danish Boats measured and described”, Stanford Maritime, London 1980, ISBN 054007396-2.
