The works of the shipbuilder NC Kierkegaard
NC Kierkegaard (1817 – 1869) was born in Denmark but lived most of the time in Sweden. He was a shipbuilder at the Gamla Varvet shipyard in Gothenburg and wrote a book on practical shipbuilding, which included, among other things, 44 drawings by him of different types of ships. The title of the Swedish original is ” Praktisk skeppsbyggnadskonst : ett urval af aderton stycken skeppsbyggnadsritningar, med tilhörande tackelritningar, dimensionsförteckningar, beskriftningar mm”
His drawings are made available online by the National Maritime Museums in Sweden.
A set of five plans ( Plan-1 , Plan-2 , Plan-3 , Plan-4 , Plan-5 ) from 1862 shows a three-masted barque of 180 Swedish loads ≈ 430 tons loading capacity and 37 m length at the waterline.
The ship model of the Kierkegaard barque, photos and dimensions
The model was created according to the plans of a very experienced model maker. Here are more photos: various overall views from all sides, various views of the upper deck, the hull and the rigging . Click on the pictures to zoom in!
The model of the barque is an elegant, precise work, a rare masterpiece. The sails are fastened to the yards so as not to obstruct the view of the extensive rigging. The flag is that of the Union of Sweden (with Norway) from that period.
The 1:67 scale model is 85 cm long, 22 cm wide and 57 cm high.
The model comes with a display case made of wood and (quite bad, strong light reflections) plexiglass, which can serve as protection if you want to pick up the model with your car. The showcase will not be shipped by air freight. The showcase is 93 cm long, 29 cm wide and 63 cm high.
The model works best when it is displayed without a display case.
