The Pram from Hjerting, Denmark, from 1930
This simple pram was built around 1930 in Hjerting, at the southern end of the Danish North Sea coast. It was made of spruce and had a sword in the middle to reduce drift when sailing. This type of boat was very common in Hjerting and the surrounding area and was used for fishing with rods, nets and gillnets. The shape was similar to the dories of the great Newfoundland fishing schooners.
The Hjerting pram is described in Christian Nielsen’s book, “Wooden Boat Designs, Classic Danish Boats measured and described”, Stanford Maritime, London 1980, ISBN 054007396-2.
